Wandering Man (Demo)
05:46
|
|||
10 000 miles since I left my home
West to the rockies and north through the storms
I left my darling in an good standing home
I went riding the highway, the unbroken horse
Darling, oh darling, will you stay by my side
lay down beside me and stay through the night
my bed has gone empty and the nights have grown cold
I’ve been sleeping without you I’ve been sleeping alone
How many roads have you gone down?
How many times have you come through this town?
I will not grow lonely and old by myself
I will not be the woman of a wandering man
I ranged through the rocks and the great northern pines
The Shield was a mistress and I knew all her lines
I took my earnings and I faced to the west
I had coins in my pockets I was drinking again
I dreamed of my darling as I lay down to rest
the grey on her temples put a fist through my chest
I woke to the morning and I faced it alone
I’ve been riding the highway now I’m coming back home
10 000 miles since I left my home
West to the rockies and north through the storms
When I left my darling (in a north country home) (in an alberta home)
I’ve been riding the highway, now I’m coming back home

The Stranger (Demo)

I met my darling Nancy when she was 17
I saw her when she was dancing sent a shiver right through me
We lived down by the river ‘bout 20 miles from town
We worked hard for our dollars, built a home and settled down
I fell asleep in the loving arms of the one who’s dear to me
I dreamed I crossed the prairie, unbridled and free
I saw a scene of violence rising up in front of me
I recognized my darling, saw a stranger strike her down
Terrified by omens I went screaming twisting round
I woke up in the loving arms of the one who’s dear to me
In the morning we went riding for a wander through the twon
I was fractured by the image of a man I saw around
I knew that in that moment with clarity of mind
I recognized that stranger from my walking through the night
That stranger he looked up at me, with the devil in his eyes
I came back to the township with a pistol in my hand
I broke into the barroom and fell upon that man
My eyes shone with destruction, I was screaming out her name
I knocked him to the floorboards and I took a lethal aim
I stood up tall, I raised my gun, I was screaming out her name
They dragged me from the barroom, and they hung me from a tree
I saw my darling Nancy standing right in front of me
Her eyes they shone with sorrow, she was screaming out my name
And as my soul departed, I was smiling just the same
My darling, I had saved her from a wicked death foretold

Up in the north where the hard winters blow
there lives the woman who gathered my wanderings
Caught in the sway of a song of romance
she knows the movements, she knows the dance
Spinning and turning with her hand on my back
her hand on my back shook the spine of the prairies
and turned all the heads of the gathering crows
flocking down south from refinery rows
Come home now my darling, I've been whispering your name
I been hearing your voice in my dreams
i went to dance with an honest girl
and tonight I will see her again
Hers are the hands that been haunting my dreams
she is the dream now of every man dancing
I took to the highway for the summertime months
For twenty-nine days I been working the roads
Sailed down the highway on an ocean of grain
an ocean of grain cast me right to your doorstep
Now I know in my heart that wherever I roam
wherever I go I will find my way home
Come home now my darling, I’ve been whispering your name
I’ve been hearing your voice in my dreams
i went to dance with an honest girl
and tonight i will see her again

Hunting Dog Night (Demo)

|

Well you don’t meet kindly women when you’re living in the bars
sleeping through the morning in the front seat of your car
woke up from my slumber, found her knocking on my door
I was half asleep again
My darling came to me on that hunting dog night
Stomach full of longing and a burning in her eye
Drinkin’ all my whiskey darling, drinking all my wine
my darling she might kill me but I just might last the night
i dreamed she rose up with me on that fallen river bank
my chest had gone to heaving and a splitting in my flank
ran the river crossing with her howling at my neck
I was half asleep again
My darling came to me on that hunting dog night
Stomach full of longing and a burning in her eye
Drinkin’ all my whiskey darling, drinking all my wine
my darling she might kill me but I just might last the night
