Sprinter in a Field
03:02
|

Call your name 'cross the field,
you have a sprinter in your blood.
I am jealous of your wide nose
and long legs.
Summer bronzed your back,
turned a wild eye to your scorn,
called you reckless as you laugh
through golden teeth.
She longs for the sun to lie her down,
feel the short grass on her back,
hoist her knees and take her loving,
burn the wanting from her breast.
Call your name 'cross the field,
you have a fever on your brow.
Let your belly swell
and shape you as the moon.
Call me to gaze,
to curse your skin and call you old.
Saw your round ass wave
and named you as you were.
She longs for the sun to lie her down,
feel the short grass on her back,
hoist her knees and take her loving,
burn the wanting from her breast.

All I want is a piece of land by the water
when the cold wind comes and dries my nose and mouth.
I would raise an early home and face to the east
and bring only my hands and wife and mind.
Give me love and bring me child from the water
to ward off fear and cleanse my mind of evil.
I have grown the strength of hand to tame the boiling sea
and bend its will and sterile use for me.
Bring me firm and able mind by the water.
Be stern with those who say I am older now.
I will rise up with the sun and he will rise with me
and claim my heart and keep my family.

Oh river, rest your vengeance
I am not the one you seek.
Deep underwater a restless spirit
calls your name in viciousness.
Down by the river, occurrence of violence,
my dear brother lies dead on the bank
all for the love of the reckless woman
who stole my heart and took my name.
Blind old river sees blood in the distance.
Pools on the water, tear out my eyes.
She’s a killer, a killer of men,
full and loved and honest shape.
Oh river, bear away my burden.
I have succumbed to a wicked fear.
I am haunted by an awful demon
my brother’s ghost comes chained in stones.
Up from the river a cascading spirit
rose as steam and fades as mist
and whispers closely, mouth full of water,
“I curse your soul, I curse your name.”
Blind old river sees blood in the distance.
Pools on the water, tear out my eyes.
She’s a killer, a killer of men,
full and loved and honest shape.

Workhorse

I am young with desire for the yard
a workhorse borne of muscle and lashing of the arm.
I am the old one, a wisdom born of love.
Finding calm in the work to be done
raise a crop to the hillside, be docile and strong
and mount a harness, assign me to a field
Live a stern and patient life.
Be husband to the ground and to a wife.
I have grown so strong and been very good.
I cannot raise a home with these hands
no strength in my muscles can build to withstand
the savage weather that tears across the plains
But there are things you can do for yourself
lend a hand to my aching and rest me back to health
and learn to love me as wrongly as I am
Live a stern and patient life
Be husband to the ground and to a wife
I have grown so strong and been very good
